What it does
Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. It also forms enzymes, hormones, and antibodies.
How much
General adult reference intake is around 0.83 g per kg of body weight per day (EFSA). Requirements can be higher for active individuals, older adults, and people recovering from illness.
Where to find it
Animal sources include fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy. Plant sources include pulses, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Combining plant sources across the day covers all essential amino acids.
