Fibre

Plant-origin carbohydrates that resist digestion. Split broadly into soluble and insoluble types with different effects.

What it does

Fibre contributes to normal bowel function. Soluble fibre such as oat beta-glucan is associated with the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol.

How much

EFSA reference intake is 25 g per day for adults. Most European and North American diets fall short of this.

Where to find it

Whole grains, pulses, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds. Variety across the week matters as much as total grams.
