Carbohydrates
The body's preferred fuel. Structure ranges from simple sugars to complex, slowly digested starches and fibres.
What they do
Carbohydrates provide glucose for cellular energy, particularly for the brain and working muscles. Fibre is a subtype that resists digestion and supports gut function.
How much
Reference intakes suggest 45–60 % of energy from carbohydrate, with an emphasis on whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and pulses.
Choosing well
Whole-food carbohydrates come packaged with fibre and micronutrients. Refined starches and free sugars have a smaller nutrient contribution and can drive higher glycaemic responses.
