Pregnancy

Nutritional priorities during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is one of the few periods where supplementation is often clinically appropriate (folate in early pregnancy, and typically iodine and vitamin D). Whole-food priorities are colourful plants, quality protein, and food-safety basics. Always follow guidance from your midwife, obstetrician or GP.

Where to focus
  • Adequate folate before and during early pregnancy
  • Iron, iodine and choline throughout
  • Omega-3 DHA for fetal brain development
  • Food-safety awareness for raw fish, soft cheeses and undercooked meat
Meal ideas
  • Lentil and spinach stew with lemon and yoghurt
  • Baked salmon with quinoa and roasted vegetables
  • Eggs on rye with avocado and greens
Key nutrients

Folate

Iron

Blood volume expands significantly; needs increase.

Iodine

Essential for fetal brain and thyroid development.

DHA (omega-3)
